Al via la venticinquesima stagione mondiale del campionato Superbike.  Sul circuito di Phillip Island in Gara 1 in prima fila sono schierate la Kawasaki di Tom Sykes - in pole position - seguita dalla Aprilia di Max Biaggi e dalle Ducati di Carlos Checa e Jakub Smrz. 

Partono bene Sykes, Biaggi e Checa, con lo spagnolo che passa presto in seconda posizione. Dopo poche curve il campione del mondo della stagione 2011 porta la sua Ducati davanti a tutti. Tom Sykes fatica a tenere il passo e presto viene passato da Max Biaggi che sfrutta al massimo la sua Aprilia sul rettilineo principale del circuito e non permette a Checa di allungare.
All'ottavo giro il colpo di scena: lo spagnolo sbaglia all'uscita di un curvone veloce e la sua Ducati  lo scaraventa in aria per terminare la corsa nel prato. Fortunatamente non ci sono conseguenze fisiche per Carlos Checa che si rialza subito, zoppicando appena, ma è piuttosto malconcia la sua Ducati.
Questa caduta spalanca la strada della vittoria a Max Biaggi, che infatti arriva primo con più di 8 secondi di vantaggio su Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport). Terzo   Guintoli (Team Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati).
Malgrado la brutta caduta in Gara 1, Carlos Checa è al via di Gara 2 grazie all'ottimo lavoro svolto dai meccanici del team Althea. Il colpo di scena stavolta è alla prima curva: Max Biaggi tocca con la sua Aprilia la Kawasaki di Tom Sykes scattato dalla pole position e piega la leva del freno anteriore. Al termine del rettilineo Biaggi si ritrova così nel prato e mentre cerca di non cadere raddrizza la leva del freno.
Risultato: il vincitore di Gara 1 si ritrova ultimo a 8 secondi da Tom Sykes che guida la gara e a tre secondi dal penultimo, ma comincia a far registrare il miglior tempo a ogni giro, dimostrando che crede nella possibile rimonta. 

Al quarto giro Carlos Checa passa in testa e comincia subito ad allungare sugli inseguitori mentre Max Biaggi sale in un solo giro dalla diciannovesima alla quattrodicesima posizione. Michel Fabrizio rientra ai box e per lui la gara termina qui, così come si registra la caduta di Guintoli al nono giro e di Lascorz su Kawasaki al decimo.
Lottando con Melandri e con Sykes, l'incontenibile Max Biaggi riesce a chiudere la gara in seconda posizione dietro a Carlos Checa con un ritardo di poco più di 5 secondi. Sul terzo gradino del podio Tom Sykes, che chiude con un meritatissimo podio un fine settimana che ha riportato finalmente al vertice la Kawasaki.

The twenty-fifth season of the World Superbike Championship is underway. Out in front on the Phillip Island circuit in Race 1 were Tom Sykes’ Kawasaki - in pole position - followed by Max Biaggi’s Aprilia and Carlos Checa’s and Jakub Smrz’s Ducatis.
Sykes, Biaggi and Checa get off to a good start, with the Spaniard soon assuming second position. After a few corners, the 2011 season world champion takes his Ducati ahead of the competition. Tom Sykes struggles to keep up and is soon overtaken by Max Biaggi, who really puts his Aprilia to work on the circuit’s main straight and keeps Checa from gaining ground.
High drama on the eighth lap: the Spaniard makes a mistake coming out of a fast corner and his Ducati sends him flying, with his race finishing on the grass. Fortunately there are no physical consequences for Carlos Checa who gets straight up, with a touch of a limp, but his Ducati is somewhat the worse for wear.
The incident opens the way for Max Biaggi to seize victory, which he does with a lead of more than 8 seconds on Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport). Guintoli (Team Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati) takes third place.
Despite the unpleasant incident in Race 1, Carlos Checa is all set for Race 2 thanks to the great work of the Althea team’s mechanics. This time the drama kicks in at the first corner: Max Biaggi touches Tom Sykes’ Kawasaki, which shot out of pole position, with his Aprilia, bending the front brake lever. Biaggi thus ends up on the grass at the end of the straight, and as he tries to avoid falling he straightens out the brake lever.
The winner of Race 1 consequently finds himself in last place, with an eight-second gap separating him from Tom Sykes, in the lead, and three seconds from the nearest rider, but he starts notching up the best time for every lap, showing that he still means business.
On the fourth lap, Carlos Checa takes the lead and immediately sets out to distance himself from the competition, while Max Biaggi climbs from nineteenth to fourteenth place in the space of just one lap. Michel Fabrizio returns to the pit, spelling the end of his race, as does Guintoli’s fall on the ninth lap and Lascorz’s from his Kawasaki on the tenth.
Toughing it out with Melandri and Sykes, the irrepressible Max Biaggi closes the race in second place behind Carlos Checa with a delay of just over 5 seconds. Tom Sykes takes a well deserved third place on the podium, putting the finishing touch on a weekend which saw Kawasaki’s long awaited return to the top.
